| So, I challenged Geo to come up with the most bad-*** kayak/surf fishing/adventure trailer he could. He really came through shining with this creation: That's a 16' Kayak on top The lash points are stainless steel hardware that have been coated in rubber. The tail gate folds down to load taller gear with less lifting. It will also be the base rod holder later. I'm not done adding accessories to it yet, but by next season it'll have an auxiliary power system (DC and AC), dual live wells for bait and catch, integrated canopy setup, rod holders/rod tubes, work surface, and leveling stands. The idea is to have a trailer that won't get me stuck blowing through 2+ feet of sugar sand, that'll both carry multiple kayaks and all the gear needed for a multi-day surf-fishing trip and serve as a "fishing center," keeping everything needed in one spot. At 6'x3' it has room for a ton of gear! Not to mention, it pulls like it's not even there =) !c | |

| I like it, but have a couple of questions....Are you going to skin the sides of it? It would also seem the kayak at that height would be a liability to other drivers. It might be worth enquiring with a friendly officer before finding out from a not so friendly officer. | |

I will ask around..... hang a red rag off the end of it to bring people's attention to it. Even if there is no law if someone was stupid enough to drive into it there would be plenty of lawyers who would take the case...... I see a Texas Hammer commercial. I figure that they get away with stapling a red piece of plastic at Lowe's or Home Depot so it should be cool....... but I thought of myself as a "friendly" cop and I wasn't much into writing tickets. This is a good one for the NEW cop - Mav - see of there is a code that has a height/length limit on stuff hanging out the back of a trailer.

| The length limit is 8', IIRC. (And it sticks out about 7'.)
It's also in the exact position the same yak would be on a passenger car, so if that were the case, all the cars you see hauling them would be illegal. Not to mention, it's very standard for kayaks to be hauled in the beds of trucks w/ hitch extenders, and they stick just as far (if not farther is a short bed).
Eventually, the sides will be skinned with expanded metal, no solid sides as it has to be sprayed down completely after every trip, and the sides would only be to keep stuff from sliding out (not protecting from the weather and such).
FWIW, it sits at about 5'5" when leveled on the back of the jeep - which is taller than the windshields of most cars. (Roofs, even.)

I cannot agree more.... I really want one of these, with a few personal mods to fit my needs. I love it. I don't have the skills to do it and think it is cool that I know someone who does. Nice work G

| Looks sharp, imagine it's a breeze loading up for a kayak trip with that getup. Bet it's probably easier to backup being long like that. | |

Yeah, it is a breeze - you can't see from the pics, (edit: actually, you can in the 2nd pic) but I have an outrigger bar in the rear cross bar, so I just pull that out, lift the backend of the yak on the outrigger, then walk up front and swing it on (like I did on top of vehicles). Love those outriggers, never have to lift more than half the weight of the 'yak. It's also nice, that, in my tight back parking/driveway issues, I can actually just back the jeep in, then navigate the trailer by hand to the jeep in the driveway and pull straight out. When I pull in, I just pull straight in, unhook the trailer, and then walk it around the lady's car back into its spot. Just have to remember to load the kayak BEFORE I get the trailer on the driveway, otherwise it's not wide enough to fit the kayak next to the trailer =) Backing up is very easy. No fish stories, only got a chance to go out w/ it twice before the weather got too cold. Just waiting for spring to hit =) !c
