Does anyone in the SA area know how to put in a new clutch, Stacy burned hers up. She is going to see if the dealer will take care of it but if not she will have to get it done on her own.

I'm sure we can put in a new clutch. She will need a new clutch and will need to have the flywheel turned so it will probably be a 2 day job or a really long day.

We will also need and alignment pin or a transmission input shaft to line up the clutch. Anybody got one?

Good time to change the slave cylinder, throwout bearing and pilot bushing since it is all apart.

Thanks Renee for putting out my SOS! Thank all of you for your offers to help! Here's the deal, I just got back in town so I have not had a chance to get to the dealership. Working on a way to get it to the dealership. Hopefully this week. This is what transpired, last month the dealership worked on the transfer case linkage, replacing a bushing and a clip, a PLASTIC clip is ALL that stands between our 2 wheel vs. our 4 wheel capabilities. Ask Richard about this, he helped me the first time this happened. Very common problem with JKs. Anyway, I played in some mud on Friday night and got myself stuck, no big deal or so I thought. Attempted to proceed in 4 hi for a time, just dug myself a little deeper, so went into 4lo and attempted several times to rock out, no such luck, only went deeper, and basically was running on slicks. I then notice my dash and I see no 4WD light on, even though the shifter was in 4lo. Upon wiggling the shifter, the 4WD light did light up for a sec, then went out. So, I don't know if it broke again trying to get out, or if it was ever repaired properly in the first place. I truely feel that it was not working properly when I put into 4 hi. So while I was attempting to get out, I don't believe I ever had 4 wheel drive capabilities working for me. It's still under warranty so I'm hoping they will work with me on the clutch, because if the transfer cable linkage had not failed, I can assure you that puppy would have pulled itself right through all that crap!

Also, have a stange smell still inside the jeep. Could I have boiled the transmission fluid to the point where it should be changed? Is that even something that happens. I know what burnt clutch smells like, but this is not that smell, so I'm a little nervous about my transmission, as well.

I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome. THANK ALL OF YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stacy

Some of the new clutch linings are made of strange stuff. When they outlawed asbestos they got rid of the best clutch/ brake linings. The smell is probably clutch lining (made from brussell sprouts or clam feces or some other "green"material) your transmission would be warmer going 70 down the highway than crawling or mudding. I would definately check it though to make sure the oil is not contaminated (water, metal, or whatever). It is cheap insurance to change the oil for peace of mind if nothing else. Let us know what happens, and let me know if I can help. SA Area Clutch Help Needed Icon_pirat

i never tire of hearing about burnt/ broken parts because of storys like this.

when your tires hit the dirt put it in 4low.......when you get back to pavement switch to 2hi......

4hi is worthless, you will destroy clutches and burn up autos with it...

besides you can go way faster in 4low than your suspension is capable of handleing

sorry it was such an expensive leason for you

This was caused by the malfunction of the transfer case linkage that the dealer had fixed last month, I pretty much did as you said. Even if I had done it per your directions, the extra load was placed on the clutch due to the failure of the above mentioned linkage. I just spoke with the dealership and they do agree that if the transfer case linkage that they just repaired failed, they are responsible for the clutch and any other damage caused by said failure. Hopefully, it won't be too expensive, if the dealership denies, did you see all the SA offers to help me out? Not looking for any PRO BONO help, but do feel good in knowing I have some great guys, who can do it, or know someone who can do it and possibly help me out without breaking the bank. But, I appreciate your concern on the expenses I may incur.

http://www.jk-forum.com/showthread.php?t=85588&page=4 (page 7, post #68) I know, I know it's that other forum, but this is what I'm experiencing and there seems to be a metal fix for it. Check it out and let me know what you guys think. Of the fix, not "that other forum".

Also, spoke with my service advisor at Northstar and briefly explained what transpired, and he said if the transfer case link failed, they are responsible for the clutch and any other damage incurred. I told him I was holding the plastic clip in my hand and he basically agreed, "FAIL". It's not a done deal obviously until they inspect it. But sounded promising on the phone.

Let me know what I should have them check out, replace tranny fluid, etc., you know the stuff that Jeff/Randy said I should do to the clutch and other stuff while it's torn apart.

Wish me luck, I'm going to dealership tomorrow to "work it" SA Area Clutch Help Needed 312629 Just kidding SA Area Clutch Help Needed Icon_geek

never...never tell the dealership that you were offroading and something broke. they like to call that abuse SA Area Clutch Help Needed Kopfschuettel for some reason. makes no sense, but it happens. i would say, "i was driving up to a friends ranch and it was muddy so i shifted into 4wd to avoid making big ruts and notice a burnt smell and then 4wd stopped working."

Totally agree Richard. To be really honest, this was not really "mudding", I was following some friends back to their house and decided to take a "short cut" through a small field that I have done several times without ever having to use 4wd. It should have taken me all of a minute to drive that route.

You guys know I don't abuse (or use my rig to it's fullest potential, like ya'll do) I'm the one who wants to "bubble wrap" the puppy before even contemplating taking it off road.

Thanks for all the moral support.

So far, so good. Had the jeep towed to the dealership Friday evening. Good news was, the tow truck driver who originally whinched me out and towed me home, had offered to tow it to a dealership if needed. So, I took him up on his offer and he towed me to the dealership at about 2:30 Sat morning, when things slowed down for him. Once we were at the dealership I inquired what do I owe you? And he said, not a thing! I left some $$ inside his truck with a note to thank him. He also gave me a very heavy duty tow strap with one of those industrial type ratchetts, for the "next time" I get stuck.

Hopefully, I'll hear tomorrow what the verdict is. When I know something, I'll post up.

Everyone have a good week!

Just wanted to share some good, well, GREAT news! Northstar Dodge approved all work on my jeep, warrantied! SA Area Clutch Help Needed Icon_cheers Really dodged a financial bullett there! For any SA people who use a dealership, Northstar Dodge is the place to go, serious, they have been extremely user/mod friendly. I guess I'm used to dealing with Ancira, where everything is a battle, except the sale of the jeep to me, of course. After that, everything went down the SA Area Clutch Help Needed 802387trying to deal with Ancira's service dept.

Thanks everyone for your moral support, offers to help, etc. This forum and it's members kick ass!

You and me both! Hey Randy, when you get a moment, will you check out my transfer case link fix thread and let me know what you think. The dealership has agreed to put the parts on it, but I'd just like someone with alot more knowledge than myself check out the write up fix. It's pretty detailed, and he mailed the "kit" to me today.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Looks like a winner to me! Its crazy makin' parts for a new rig. I do it all the time, but my rig is 36yrs. old! SA Area Clutch Help Needed Suspect If I had one like yours I would do this mod as preventative maintenance. Sucks being stranded. I bet the shaft is metric, that is why he has to grind and drill to strange dimensions. I bet that on a toyota or another foreign rig there is the exact bushing. I don't spend enough time working on those to know for sure.

In my opinion....I would do a lot of grinding / drilling before putting a toyota part on my Jeep!! (it could make the throttle stick...lol)

Thanks for taking a look at the write up Randy. I'm having the dealership put the "kit" on this week. I appreciate your time and input. Rik, a fellow jeeper from CA is who designed this, and while he will admit, it is by no means a PERMANENT fix, just much more reliable than what we JKrs have now. Also, my service advisor had mentioned he thought he had heard of an aftermarket company coming out with something. I see that someone has already brought this to the attention to Joe Thompson who works for Teraflex and he was going to mention it to R&D. I might email Joe and just see where they are at on this ideal.

See you at Hooters, if not before.
