It really depends on where you're going with it. I mean, why are you getting lifted in the first place? Where do you see yourself going with your build?
For what it's worth the TJ does really well with a small (1" to 1.25") body lift
along with a 1" motor mount lift (so everything lines up and helps eliminate driveline vibes). This gives you room to do stuff like install a high-clearance gas tank skid, a tummy tuck (transfer case has to go
somewhere to get that dragging belly out of the way), etc. And until you do a tummy tuck, it helps reduce the angle of the rear driveline, too, which puts off the need to convert to a Slip Yoke Eliminator and double-cardan drive shaft as you go higher. And it doesn't look silly like some of the more extreme 3" BL I've seen out there.
So if you're looking for extra tire clearance, then it's much easier and cheaper to add a BL/MML than it is to jack up the suspension another inch--especially on the inherently short wheelbase TJ. Plus, it's something you can install in the garage in an afternoon. I did the TeraFlex 3" lift and a 1" BL and 1" motor mount, and to be honest kinda wish I'd gone with a smaller suspension lift, like the OME 2.5", that's supposed to give a better on-road ride and excellent off-road flex. just because I could keep it a little lower, which doesn't push the driveline as hard and keeps things a little more well mannered. Then again I should've gone long-arm to begin with. I guess hindsight is 20/20, eh?
The BL/MML I have no regrets about, regardless.
But yeah it's a pretty vague question, and the answer really can depend on why you're wanting a lift in the first place and where you see yourself going with the build.
By the way, instead of simply lifting the factory motor mounts, I went ahead and installed
1" raised heavy duty motor mounts from Brown Dog. Pretty amazing stuff.
Oh yeah, PS, Savvy is
supposed to be coming out with a baddass flat (or at least nearly-flat/contoured) tummy tuck at some point in the near future, and allegedly it will ship with everything you need, including body spacers and such, so if it's not an immediate necessity, you may want to hold off for a bit to better evaluate your options when it becomes available.
