PostSubject: grinding and smoothing my rock rings   Mon 12 Apr 2010, 3:33 pm

I took my wheels apart and separated my rock rings so I could smooth them out. Previous owner used them like they were stolen and then played chicken with a K-rail. The scratches/dings/cuts caused the paint to start flaking off. So I used a wire wheel on my grinder to get rid of all the paint. I then used an 80 grit flap wheel to smooth out most of the dings/cuts. It looks pretty good like that but if you get up close you can still see the small grinding lines. Is there something for the grinder that is for finishing surfaces? I found a spongy brill pad type wheel that was for finishing but it doesn't fit my Dewalt grinder. I was originally going to paint the rings yellow to match the jeep. I found some "John Deer" color yellow paint and the cap looked exactly like the yellow on the jeep. I sprayed some on a hidden area and it looks nothing like the cap or the jeep's yellow. I like the way it looks now without paint, just would rather it being a little more smooth.

I will post before and after pics when I'm done.

Just buff them out against some rocks at K2. That should do it.

Ok, I don't know if you are working with aluminum or steel, but you will have to work it down with some 600 grit, then 1000 grit (with water-just keeping things "wet"). I've used a random orbital sander on alum, and stainless, then get the buffing wheel after it with various grits/compounds, working finer grits as you go. Then a white rouge for the final buff to bring out the mirror finish. ** If you really want to.... affraid
