Not sure if posting in the right place, does any know if a np231 transfer case and 5-speed transmission for a Cherokee will work on a 91 yj? if yes, what kind of questions should I ask the seller?

Doesnít it depend on what engine you got? 2.5 or 4.0? If itís the same engine it will

I am pretty sure too that anything can be made to fit Öif you have the money and/or skills.

I am not an expert in any way and what I know if what I have researched for my own wrangler but I am sure that if dancb1 just wants a simple bolt-on he needs to know from what engine the transmission and transfer case are coming from since the housing and splines are different.

So if his YJ has a 4.0L and the Cherokee he is getting the transmission and transfer case has it too than yes it will just bolt-on. If his YJ has a 2.5L and the Cherokee a 4.0L or vice versa it wont bolt-on and some modifications are needed.

The t-case is the same, so no problems there. If he has a crappy ass 2.5 POS, he needs an AX5 5-speed, if he has a 4.0. he needs an AX 15 5-speed.

I guess I shouldn't assume the dude knows what engine he actually has etc.... lol

PostSubject: Re: np231   Tue 04 May 2010, 11:44 am

here is the deal with the NP231

jeep cherokee up to 1990 are 21 spline inputs, later are 23 spline
Jeep wrangler with the 6 Cyl are 23 spline
Jeep Wrangler with 2.5 AUTOMATIC are 23 spline inputs
jeep wrangler with 2.5 5 speed are 21 spline inputs

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np_nvg_input_gears.htm

so if you have a 4 cyl stick YJ, and he has a 1991 or later XJ, you will need to swap input shafts, or find a Tcase from another 4 Cyl stick YJ/TJ
