PostSubject: Dual throttle bodies????   Dual throttle bodies???? Icon_minitimeMon 07 Jun 2010, 12:04 pm

I know alot of people around the forum have talked about throwing hemi's into their rigs and more than a couple have done it. But does any body know about putting in a second throttle body. The high nessan's have them and thats how they seem to make so much more horse power and torque with a smaller block V6 than our JK's are running.

I just wanna see if any one has done this or has heard of anything close to this or if its even doable. It wouldn't void the factory warrenty, or at least not all of them like the hemi would, so it seems like it could be something some people could consider. Chime in thanks

i know man but i just want to figure out how the 370z's do it, and see if that kind of power can translate into a jeep motor and what would it take to do it? I know they run duel fuel rail systems with one on each side of the V, each has its own air intake system, and so on and so forth. its wild to look at but they make 352 to the fly wheel, and i dont see why something like this cant be done.

I see where you are going...There is a lot more than just the throttle bodies to make it work. The cam or, in that case cams would be completely different. Those engines build high RPM to help with HP, whereas what would help the driveabilty of a Jeep is torque. The fuel mapping would have to be changed also with larger injectors to keep up. 13.5 parts air to 1 part fuel is optimum always---at idle and WFO, so more air = more fuel. I am not real familiar with the Z engine, but I bet the torque #s are not as impressive as the HP. These engines were engineered for completely different applications. That would be like comparing a lawn mower engine to a crotch rocket with the same displacement.

I do think we can use some tricks from the high performance folks to help, I just don't think twin throttle bodies is the easiest, cheapest, emmission legal way to do it.

Don't take this as a flame....I am just giving my $.2

The after market companies spend mega bucks for research on chips, and gadgets...some good some not so good. Most all are emmission and warranty friendly. My suggestion is to search the intrawebz and talk to folks that have learned by mistake.....or put the whole z engine and computer in your rig....

Yeah, give it a shot of NAWZ, dog Laughing

The interesting thing about this is I'd never even heard of dual throttle bodies until just a couple of days ago when a friend of mine was showing off his new 2010 Mustang and pointed it out. Not sure what benefts such a thing could really have on modern engines... Maybe it was just cosmetic.

what yall say are good points the Z engine is made for a completely different purpose. It does make all of its HP and Torque and a higher RPM, but it does still make 325 torque which is still almost 100 pounds more than the jeeps make. I personally am not considering this; Im just using it as food for thought. If its just as complitcated as a complete engine swap then its not practical for the gains and the experimental factor that would come with it.
keep the comments up

Here are the issues with this. First off, no body makes a dual throttle body intake for this engine. So in order to do this, you would need a custom intake manifod made. Read, sheet metal intake. These are expensive, and plus nobody will have a template of this engine to go off of.

So a basic sheet metal intake for a SBC run about $2000 on up. Add in the price and extra labor, tuning, etc. for a one off production $$$$.

Then you would need the computer reprogrammed for this. I don't know anybody that can do this... $$$$$

So basically you are better off with a supercharger or Hemi, both would probably be cheaper in the long run.

Then that answered my question. Like i said I'm not planning on doing anything like this at all, I just wanted to throw out an idea that I had based on the Z design. If it was going to be that complicated then truely it just isnt worth it especially if its comparible by price too a hemi swap.

As far as a supercharger goes, I'm not impressed. There's a guy here at work that has a Ripp with methanol injection in his 2009 JKU running 4:11 gears, and I can still out run his ass. Dual throttle bodies???? Suspect I dont know... I'm a flat-earth kinda guy. You want more horsepower, you need more CID.

Let's face it, Jeep gave us a barely adequate engine for a stock Jeep. If you modify it, it fails to give you a...how should I say it..."lively" driving experience. If you only lived off road and never had to use the JK as a daily driver on the street, then the 3.8 is probably more than adequate. However, freeway driving with the 3.8 sucked IMHO.

I'm with Kenny on this one. There's no replacement for displacement. I know that there's a small difference in price between the superchargers and a DIY hemi swap but in all reality, if you're going to buy a used JK and wanted something with more oompf to it, would you want the tricked out JK with the supercharger for $48K or the tricked out JK with the hemi for $50K? You have to like what you're driving and if you like the thought of the sc on the JK, I say go for it. I have nothing against them...I just happen to like the hemi a lot more. Besides, you get to see the puzzled looks on other JK drivers' faces when you zoom past them with the V8 roar!!! Dual throttle bodies???? 3119

TXcrawler & Randy hit it on the head with the Nissan engine. You would be blazing your own trail the whole way with little to no technical support. You can install any engine in the JK but getting the CANBUS to play nicely with the powerplant is a different story. You could go the route that STRAIGHT TO RIDICULOUS took and just scrap the whole JK electronics and use whatever the hell you want. However, I suspect that you want your factory electronics to play nicely withe engine/transmission. If so, you have a few options, supercharger, hemi or a diesel. Yes, a diesel can be done but it's really expensive and not really a feasible option right now (Dan at BOR did one a while back).

Lastly, your talk of Nissans made me think back to one of my old rides. At one time I had a 1991 300ZX twin turbo with the Jim Wolf Stage III kit. It was 397hp and about 320lb/ft torque. On the 2-3 shift, it would send the car sideways if you weren't careful. I loved that car. It wasn't set up as a quarter mile runner but it would do 13.20's.

I say do both. Do the Hemi swap and later on get the sc.

Tim your right. All of the trouble probably wouldnt be worth it. I threw out the idea and had no idea how it would be recieved. It kinda got tossed back lol, but now it is obvious that it would be just as expensive and way more experimental, so we can now say in conclusion this isnt worth the time, effort, or money that it would take. Like i said above though someone will eventually have my idea again and will have this thread to look for. At least it wasnt a giant waste of time.

why did you get rid of that 300zx? Those are some bad mofo's; I've seen them blow the doors off of the new 370z's and I always laugh at the pony cars trying to keep up.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea. I just wanted a change I guess. It was a bad mofo. I remember going up I35 and showing a Firehawk where the bear shit in the woods. He started it, I finished it. He didn't know that a 40mph roll is where this thing shines. I let off of it at an undisclosed MPH with him well behind. He never let off. A few miles later I saw him pulled over by a cop near the Hooters at the Forum. D'oh!!!!

I had wanted to buy a throttle body spacer for my 4.0, but i read up in JP magazine, they did this cool article about power gain myths. Things like intakes and exhausts always help, but throttle bodies hardly make a difference at all. In all honesty, i have tried everything for power gains, all i really needed was 411s. Would have saved me time and money, and highway wear and tear. Gears seem to be the best power torque solution in most cases in my opinion.
