PostSubject: Saving for an engine swap. Need your input   Saving for an engine swap. Need your input Icon_minitimeWed 16 Jun 2010, 5:07 pm

As my profile says my wrangler has the 2.5L engine. It is fine in the city and off-road but horrible on the highway. I need to start thinking on saving some money to change the engine. My engine has almost 130K and its knocking. What are my options for a bigger engine?

What I have been thinking:

- Buy a wrecked wrangler with a 4.0L …how much $ do they run for?
- Install a Chevy 350 with advance adapter conversion package I don’t know what all I need and how much it will cost
- Diesel engine, can I do this? How much work and $?

Budget and skills are limited so I am leaning toward buying a wrecked wrangler but what do you guys think? Who has done it before?

Thanks!

Honestly your best and easiest would be to buy a wrecked 4.0L Wrangler since it already has a wiring harness and I'm sure you wouldn't have to fab anything up but I could be wrong. If you go this route then I would suggest you do a stroker kit on the 4.0L before you drop it into your jeep.

Yeah that’s what I think. All I would need is to weld new motor mounts and transfer everything from the donor jeep (transmission, transfer case, wire hardness, computer, driveshafts, etc)

sorry bud, eng mounts are different. the Tranny may also crap out on you with the HP and Torque from the the 4.0L.

eng & tranny swap, might as well go with a SBC . there are kits out there for mounts and wiring. SBC may end up being cheaper in the end. bonus for more HP & Trq. plus its a much cooler build.

a good place to start

wow I think that’s a good deal! And it’s not far away from me. I have a few things to pay before I get into the Jeep so I can’t afford that at this moment. Just planning for now.

COMPLETELY understand that! Seems like every F'n time I save up some money to buy something for the heep, some bill or another comes up without fail. Funny how I'd saved about $1200.00 over the corse of this year and every single time I was ready to order my crusher corners, some f'n thing ALWAYS came up No . So no corners and no extra $1200 saved up in the bank Sad

Just looking out for a fellow jeeper. Saw that it was fairly close and remembered your thread when I came across it today.

Raul, I found a working engine out of an apache attack helicopter... Rolling Eyes Maybe Tim and Randy will help with the install.

seriously though, whenever you get ready, I'm willing to help you get the new powerplant in your Llanero.

HaHa if they can pull that off then I am set, let me just go buy whatever engine I find cheap on CL, they will make it work on my Jeep

Thanks! It will eventually happen but I have to pay some bills first. I am in the planning stage right now to see what my options are. Right now the engine is “good” beside that knocking sound. I doesn’t burn oil or anything, idles good, just lack of power on highway but that’s just because it is a 4cyl. I just hope the engine doesn’t die before I am able to afford something bigger. If not I will have to replace it with the same engine.

Are you going to be DD the heep? You need to check the emission laws, I dont think you can put a chevy in the jeep and still keep it legal. You have to keep the same modle engine as the jeep and it has to be the same year and newer. So you can put a hemi in it and keep it legal. Thats if you are going to DD drive your jeep, and you live in TX.
I hope this helps

not really. i've yet to hear of anyone taking their vehicle in for state inspection and having someone plug into the diagnostic port or look under the hood (unless getting an oil change at the same time). never happened to me either. just the basics, blinkers, whippers, windsheild for cracks, lights & horn.

Excuse me while I get on my soapbox......

I used to be an inspector...the current inspection includes visual inspection of all emission equipment---i.e. cat and evap canister, factory airbox, master cylinder, all brake lines, all pads/ shoes, power steering box and mounting to frame, p/s hoses, frame and suspension, and even the damn lug nuts. There are some silly rules about window tinting, windshields, and tailpipes.
In the state of Tex. you do not have to have a windshield, but you have to have wipers.....you also have to have a place to affix the sticker....

In a nutshell the inspectors do not do the inspection the way DPS wants them to---they don't make enough money on a sticker to justify the time. By signing the sticker and the paperwork they are saying they did a complete inspection according to the book. It sux being an inspector because you say you do the inspection (according to the state)....and your boss gives you 15min to do it. If you get caught..you get a ticket from DPS.

The emission testing is comming....it is only a matter of time... Bexar and surrounding counties will be required to have the test. That is the way D/FW implemented theirs.

As far as a repower it has to have the system according to that model year or newer. 1985 and newer have to have the emission equipment that it came from the factory with. 84' and older it is against the law to remove emission equipment, but if you bought the vehicle with it missing you are grandfathered in.

Being in Corpus Christi, Raul...you probably have more time, but how much---who knows??

i'll be selling a rebuilt 4.0 in the very near future. i'm building a stroker and won't need the new rebuilt and if i ever get my floorboards fixed i'll even take you for a ride in it. i'm having the crank turned and new bearings, the heads been rebuilt with new seals and a valve job and all new rings on the pistons. the only thing i didn't do was bore the block out or replace the cam. i even have an extra h.o. intake, throttle body, and fuel rail to go with it. may even throw in the header but i haven't decided if i'm gonna use that 1 or get a new 1

At this moment I can’t really afford it but when I do it I will probably put the 4.0, unless someone change my mind. The 4.0 looks like an “easy” swap and I know all my parts will hold up the 4.0 power and it won’t start braking things.

Scott thanks! I will take that into consideration at the time of the swap but I would like to keep the jeep manual if possible.
