Hey all. I'm looking to do a gear swap on my JK X '09. Do we have anyone good with gears in the club. I did a lot if GM and ford. I know it's all nuts and bolts at the end of the day, but would like to see if someone is good with the Dana axles that would be willing to help. Is there anyone willing? I have the tools.

Gears are something most people don't do themselves. I've got a kind-of OK understanding of what to do, but I have very little experience. Just this week I got in Randy Lyman's differentials book because I'm tired of paying for gears and not being able to help others avoid the same.

But have you really done a lot of gears in GM and Ford vehicles? Because if so why would there be any question about a Jeep and a need for help? They all use solid axles with integral carriers, and more than a few of them are Dana axles specifically. There's nothing different about doing them in a Jeep.

Sorry, most have gone & gotten their's done at a shop. Gears are voodoo best left to the experts What a Face

I'd love to learn how to do them, but not my junk!! it's an expensive lesson if it's not done right. If you've got the experience, then you should be ok.

I did mine. I don't know if you want me to do yours. I have not had any catastrophic failures yet. I think if you have done others it's not that different. I just went on YouTube and checked it out real well. If you are anal about it and use the gauges it should work out well. I just started out with the original shimming and went from there. Also another thing to do is buy or make bearings that slide on and off so you dont have to press them on and off for shim changes.

I'm taking lots of pics. Maybe I'll just do a write up for the forum to help others if I have time.
