I was thinking more along the lines of some sort of FLIR.......maybe for finding people in fires or as they cross the border or something.

| Like skoaman said, it appears to be a FLIR. Thermal imaging camera. Detecting heat signatures. They use it to find people walking in the desert (or where ever) at night. I used an older version, it sucks on really hot days because if there were some large boulders it would give off a heat signature and you could think that it was a possible person. | |

| FLIR (we called it the "TIT" or "Thermal Imaging Thingie") is becoming more and more common there are several patrol units in Harris County that have them and they sure are handy - you can see fresh tire tracks if you lose someone in a neighborhood or if they drive into a garage and close the door. We also went to night clubs at 2am and looked for "hot spots" as certain folks were walking out... I remember using it in the Army and it was like voodoo.... awesome to see someone long before they could see you. We use it in the Fire Service to look for people in smoke filled buildings as well as heat load etc.... Cool tool. I agree though.... that is just a good ol' spotlight. The FLIR is usually mounted on top (of patrol units) so it can cover 360 anyway. | |

where did you use a FLIR? Military? The one I used was in the military. It was attached to the roof of the vehicle and the monitor was in the glove compartment. If I was by myself I would drive with with the monitor turned towards me and move the joystick around looking for heat signatures. That kind of sucked because the monitor gave off so much light it affected your night vision; making it hard to look out the vehicle. I preferred to go with a two man patrol, we would tie some IR chem lights to the front of the vehicle and the driver would use NVG's and the passenger would put a tarp/blanket over his head and the monitor and look for the heat signatures. You had to make sure you had a good seal around the passenger and monitor so it wouldn't white out your NVG's.
