Congo Rats! It's kinda sad for me that you are upgrading from better gears than I have. I should check the trash can when you get rid of your old 4.10s. Maybe I should rethink the whole 37"s thing.

Well if its any consolation... Shannon (knowing I'm getting new gears) says to me last night "So when you getting a bigger lift?" Me: "I'm not" Shannon: "better gears, needs bigger tires, needs bigger lift" Me: "you just want my old lift and tires" Shannon: "your point is?"

I think it is around $800 now, but I'm not sure. And yes, the price is for everything. I will trade you my 3.21's for your 5.13's. Soap box time but 3.21's are not enough gear for a 32" tire let alone something larger. Many times at shiloh or barnwell in lo 1st gear, I will have it floored trying to make it up a steep hill just to keep the motor from dying and you have to ride the brake hard going down steep stuff cuz it will run away from you. AND THEY SUCK ON THE HIGHWAY! Actually worse mileage than what a lot of 3.73 and 4.10's report and it won't go 70 without staying in the gas hard! Sorry, i saw gears and had to climb up on my purell box and say WTF were the jeep engineers thinking with 3.21's? (O ya, you can't spin the tires very well either, sand or mud usually bogs the motor all the way down instead of spinning the tires.)

Sorry to hear you took you ride to Alan @ 249Drive trane...Wouldn't take my push mower to him to change the spark plug. Think about it! Junk yard to do quality work on your JK,,,,NOT..... I know, your woundering what the heck? Why is he bashing this guy? Because I know him and his work ethics. Don't clean housings out properly, uses used bearings in older units, lets noisy rearends go out the door,,,do I need to continue? Hope you don't have problems with yours,,,, . |

| Paul- Maybe you know more about the guy... But I googled for info about him, and I find nothing but good reviews and people recommending him. All sorts of forums- from Jeeps, high performance trucks, mustangs, etc etc. Lots of different forums, and couldn't find a single complaint. That's unusual when you consider that anytime anyone has a bad experience, it gets discussed and re-quoted in forums over and over.
Admittedly he does re-use the bearings. But anyone that wants new bearings could always buy new bearings and give them to him to change at the time of the install. In my case, the bearings were replaced back in April when we did the lockers, so I don't see a reason to worry about them at this point.
He offers a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty on his work. So if there is something wrong, it will more than likely show itself in that amount of time. I don't know what brand of gears he's using. But I read somewhere a while back that all brands (for JK's) were made by Superior and just re-badged. Don't know if that is still true. But if it is, then I don't see a problem.

I'm no mechanic but when I called 4WP's to inquire about re-gearing before I even knew about 249, they were telling me I needed new carriers and other parts just to install the 4.88's - quoted costs were just over $1500 for both axles! Well, I guess that was a load of baloney!..all 249 did was gear/pinion and I've been rolling fine and it wheeled great. I say all this as I'm looking for a hunk of wood to knock on!
