Putting together another recovery bag for the Jeep Empty
PostSubject: Putting together another recovery bag for the Jeep   Putting together another recovery bag for the Jeep Icon_minitimeThu 21 Jan 2010, 1:16 pm

As stated, I'm in the process of putting together a recovery bag for the jeep.

Heres what I have so far:

1 20'x2" Nylon strap rated for 6800 lbs single and 12000 lbs double.
1 10'x2" Nylon strap with the same rating as the 20 footer
1 4' Certified heavy chain with hooks (dont remember the rating, but its the same as the ones I used to use to lift large steel vessels.
2 7/8 Crosby D-ring shackles
2 1/2 Crosby D-ring shackles

Any Ideas on what else I might need to carry? (besides a winch!)

This is from WOODS: I'm looking for two put a kit together that will include the hard to find parts that should be carried offroad in the JK.

Tools:

13mm 12 point closed end wrench for break caliper removal
21mm socket for removing brake calipers in case of broken axle
35mm axle nut socket
18mm socket (just because it's often not included with standard socket sets)
7mm Alan wrench (not sure what for)
T-40 torx for hard top removal
T-50 torx for door removal
-18mm socket (18mm fasteners are common on the JK and this socket is not included in most socket sets)
- 7mm Alan bit. I needed it once, but don't remember what for.
- Fluid spill clean up kit

Inexpensive spare parts: These are parts that have been known to come loose and/or get lost on the trail.
Control arm nuts and bolts
12 point brake caliper bolt
Spare transfer case shifter cable clip
Spare Fender Clips

Tools that I carry that will not be included in this kit:
- On board air
- Tire deflators
- Yank strap
- Shackles
- Hi-lift jack
- Pneumatic jack
- Starter fluid to fix a broken tire bead
- Tire repair/plug kit
- 1/2" breaker bar, with a 6" extension and a 3/4" socket for lug nuts
- 35mm 1/2" drive socket for the axle nuts
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3/8" 6" extension
- 10mm - 19mm sockets.
- Lowes sells a double sided ratcheting wrench set. The brand is gearwrench. Two wrenches covers 9mm, 10mm, 12mm 13mm, 16mm - 19mm wrenches
- General tool role with the likes of vice grips, channel locks, screw drivers, adjustable wrenches, wire cutters etc.
- 3lb. stubby handle sledge
- Shovel
- Pick mattock
- Axe

I've developed these lists from what I have personally seen on the trail. I'm sure that others have seen additional problems.

Please add any items that you've seen as issues for the JK.

Here is the link for you fokkers that aren’t banned, or have a JKF fake ID!!!

Why don't any of these lists include a snatch block? I always thought that was standard.

i'm guessing those are not recovery straps.......oilfield slings maybe?

big difference between a sling strap and a recovery strap..........slings are designed not to stretch, recovery straps are...

my 2" straps are 25,00lb rated and my 3" is 30000lbs ..........

an unlimited is 5000lb sitting in my driveway.........north of 6000lbs , covered in mud, with 2 ocupants, and all my trailgear.......maybe 6500#'s

that jeep, stuck in mud , up to the tire tops will probably take more than a 20k strap to pull out......i usually only use the 3" strap

also i concider a highlift, a shovel, and a machette always have type things.............also i love my landscapers axe, great for busting hardpan ledges to make a new trail do-able

As far as tools, I carry a toolbox with a full set of tools.

Redneck, Yes they're oilfeild straps, not recovery straps, but I've used them for years to pull people out of stucks. I've never snapped one. Even pulling out a 96 tahoe buried to the rocker panels with a 1 ton dually snaching on it at full length and it didnt break. they're rated for 1/3 of their breaking point.

Yeah, when I get a winch, that will be one of the essentials I get.

I will have to break down and buy a hi lift jack one of these days....
