The story behind this accident was there were two girls in the car, driver of the car on the phone and she pulled out in front of this guy going 85 mph. Of course, no survivors.
Ummmmm? Do you think that phone call was THAT IMPORTANT!

I don't even know what to say to this. Next time you're on a trail and see someone do something stupid and roll or endo their rig, especially if they get hurt, I want you to blame the rig, not the driver, and then start lecturing everyone on how unsafe it is to drive a Jeep because some people make bad decisions and drive outside their capabilities. And the next time you see a Jeep that's been rolled on the road, I want you to remember to blame the Jeep for its high center of gravity and proclivity to roll when changing directions sharply at high speed and not the driver who was fiddling with the radio.
In this case, as in so many others, tragedy struck when someone did something stupid: not pay good enough attention to their environment when driving. Really, it's likely this would've happened to the girl driving regardless of whether her hands-free was working or not, partly because of the driver and partly because bluetooth/speakerphones are negligible compared to the main problem: providing too much attention to something else, in this case the conversation. And exacerbating the problem is that the oncoming vehicle was a motorcycle, which so many people miss because their casual glance doesn't notice the much smaller profile. Back when I rode bikes, this was a constant battle.
The point is that people are individuals and have different limitations. This sad case helped highlight two limitations that many suffer from: being unable to exercise good judgment regarding splitting their attention between driving and other things such as conversations with passengers or over the phone, and being more aware of their surroundings. Neither one of these weaknesses can be the basis for blanket statements blaming any one particular thing. You can't just condemn phones any more than you can motorcycles or woman drivers.

I don't want to get in this fight, but...
Cell phone -----> Driver (object) -----> (person)
Alcohol -----> Driver (object) -----> (person)
You are both pretty much saying the same thing. It was the drivers fault for using the cell phone. It was the drivers fault for drinking and getting behind the wheel. UUP4IT didn't say "don't blame the driver, blame the object (alcohol)." Just my two cents.

If I remember correctly there was a similiar thread (phone usage and driving) awhile back, and your comments back on that thread just blew me away, figured you had more sense than that. I did not even read the above post, because I'm sure you are on the same soap box.

No, she's saying that the only reason the accident happened was because the two girls driving the car were talking on the phone, that the phone caused the accident. What I'm saying is that in all reality whether the driver was talking to her passenger or to someone on the phone, either way it was probably going to happen regardless. There are many other contributing factors (the fact that it was a motorcycle coming, for instance, and that it was coming at 85mph apparently, etc). Yes, paying more attention to a conversation with her passenger or on the phone than to driving would be a major factor, but to use it as proof that having a conversation is always bad for every driver is...ridiculous.

I can see your point Deacon, but anybody talking on the phone while driving is going to have their ability to do so inhibited. It was still a factor in this accident, which is all I believe she is trying to say.

Hehehe, drama? This isn't drama, just a discussion.
Yeah terrahawk, like I said it's a factor, and it's going to inhibit anyone's ability to pay 100% attention to the world around them, just like so many other things in our daily drive. Some things for some people end up being more of a distraction than others, and some people really shouldn't be driving even if they're in a perfect distraction-free environment. She blamed the driver's phone call for the accident and made a blanket statement reinforcing her position that nobody should ever have a conversation while driving, and I disagree that it's a hard and fast rule.
