PostSubject: cheap break job?   cheap break job? Icon_minitimeFri 16 Apr 2010, 1:35 am

brakes (i think) are squeaking on my jeep. i say think, because if i am moving there is squealing, and it changes sound a bit when i hit the brakes. i have not driven the jeep for about 2 weeks as i got a daily driver (little civic 4dr - 30+ mpg is veddy nice!!).

i bought brakes from autozone (ceramic) - does anyone know where i can get rotors turned cheap?

i would do this at my house, but my driveway is on a steep slope and i hate to be the guy in the street doing this. somehow being the guy in the driveway is better, don't know why, but it is... i don't even know if i need to turn the rotors.

to be honest, i have never replaced pads before - never had a vehicle long enough. when i did it was a full brake swap - new rotors, calipers, and pads.. the jeep has 42k on it.

well... sorry i have been a stranger, but i should be out soon!

take care, y'all!!!

Hey Fred, Jon helped me do my Brakes on my old Jeep. He might be able to help out.
I never did turn my rotors, it just depends how bad they are I guess.

I would recommend having the rotors turned. Take the whole caliper off as an assembly and you can pull the rotors. take them to a machine shop and have them turned. Might as well change the parking brake pads while you have the rear rotors removed.

My 2 cents but brakes can be pretty important. and Fred I know you carry some pretty important cargo sometimes cheap break job? 518370

Ditto Jeff... If you don't turn them at least rough up the surface with a scotchbrite pad to facilitate pad break-in. If not the squeal could remain...

Squeal could be just brake dust/rust from not driving it in a while.

Most of the brake shops will turn your rotors for about 20 bucks. Its best to have them turned as they are already glazed. Putting on just new pads with glazed rotors can cause them to still squeal. Just be careful when doing the brakes if you have ABS on them. We used to pinch the brake line and open the bleeder to collapse the pistons so it wouldnt do damage to the ABS unit.
