So.... for those of you carrying CO2....like i used too..... Consider what happened today to my Brother-in-law... got the tank filled... drove home with tank.... set it in garage in shade... 10 min later.. BOOM.

Fair warning....

On a side note....anyone want to buy my 10 lb co2 tank?

He really needs to pick up that garage a bit, looks like kind of a slob with all that paint laying around.

Seriously though - wow. I have seen scuba tanks do that when the burst disks were doubled or plugged.....

Glad no one was hurt, the rest will clean up.

DAMN !!! that is so dangerous. If I were you, I'd get rid of that 10LB tank asap. Too dangerous to keep around. I don't know why people take that chance and buy them when something like this could happen at any time. Thank God, he was not driving at the time. If I were you, I would sell it cheap just to get rid of it. Think about the liability of driving around with it. No

um, so how much you selling your tank for? I could help take that dangerous contraption off your hands What a Face

Geeezus! I'm glad to see that no one was hurt. When was the tank last inspected?

This winter we had 3 out of 4 NO2 bottles blow the safety valve when the guy at the snowmobile shop overfilled them. We looked like cheech and chong going down the road when they went off. It's funny to look back on it now but we couldn't see anything.

PS - I did get a good buzz though. :-)

I'm glad to see that no one was hurt.

Wow man did it leave any glass in your jeep or did it blow it all out? So do you know the cause of the blowout? Was it a scuba or welding bottle

It was a welding steel tank not a scuba tank, made in 98 i think but HAD been inspected even though i have no idea when as the sticker was blown off....

It blew out the back left and rear window, and damaged the hood (falling debris).....

No idea why the burst disk didn't work....

Scary.....very scary....

Burst disk- did he have the bottle laying down or standing up? I've heard that laying down, if the burst disk does go, the liquid quickly freezes solid blocking it.

I wonder what it sounded like...

That said, I don't personally understand why you'd run around with CO2 on a daily driver during its daily driving duties. Or scuba tanks or whatever, for that matter. I admit it probably looks cool, but it's just one more thing to get stolen or messed up.

I'll take the bottle off your hands, though, for sure.

The DOT inspection date will be stamped on the upper area of the tank, close to the neck. One is required by law every 5 years. Only the VIP, yearly visual inspection, will be on a sticker. I don't know if a CO2 cylinder is required to have a VIP. I only know about SCUBA cylinders. By looking at the picture of the cylinder you should be able to find it. When I read about onboard CO2 for tire inflation, overpressurization in a closed truck/car in Texas heat was the first thing that came to me.

I carried Scuba bottles, both steel and aluminum, for years in the back of my pickup under a cover and never blew a disk - of course I was doing the VIPs and filling. I have seen them blow up like that and have taken them out of service for cracks in the neck and rust on the inside if they were drained completely and exposed to "air - air" or worse - seawater.

I know some folks that can look at it and tell where it failed.....

Sure am glad that no one was around when it went, would have been a significant emotional event for sure.
