PostSubject: I busted a nut   I busted a nut Icon_minitimeThu 18 Nov 2010, 10:36 am

Yeah, yeah laugh it up!!!

No, seriously. If anyone in the Corpus Christi area has an extra nut that holds the pitman arm to the steering box please let me know. I was adjusting my steering wheel so that it was straight and I have done this a few times before so it was a simple operation. However, pause for effect and numerous point and laughs, after replacing the pitman arm and and tightening the bolt, no I did not cross thread it, I put a little too much ass into tightening the bolt down and stripped all the threads from the nut. I called a few places and the places I called are trying to sell me a brand new steering box for $600 which I will not pay that much for a nut.

If anyone can help me out please let me know PM here or call my cell (254) 432 1142 ask for Skip. Thanks in advance.

You know you don’t really need to take that nut off to align your steering, right? Anyways, did you try getting it from a junk yard? I tried searching for it on Ebay but I cant find it. jeep4x4center.com has the pump for $240, I know is not what you want but is better than $600

How about tack welding the stripped nut in place?

On a different note, I am about to go back overseas and while I was there, order more stuff for my jeep. Somewhere on this forum, I THINK, there was a post by someone who had "air bag" suspension on their jeep and it was adjustable so that off road you could adjust the ride height to negogiate obstacles. Where is that or does anyone know what I am referring to?

Secondly, I was looking into the Atomic Axles. Anyone have any knowledge on those other than their web site. Thanks again and sorry for the questions I am under the weather from vaccinations courtesy of the military.

I went to Gulf Coast Nut and Bolt where I purchased a nut, for 1 dollar. MUCH kudo's to the kid who took the time to help me find a nut to fix my stupidity. Also thank you to R_unda for showing me that link, my steering is back to where it should be.

Now, I just need to get my lower control arm bracket welded on and i'll be good to go. Once that is done, I just need to wait till im deployed so I can order the Atomic Axles, coil overs and a M2 .50 cal mount for my role cage.

Do you have a place to weld the arm bracket? Take it to Blackies Welding at 2358 Pearse Dr. they have done a few little things for my TJ there, good guys! Or you can wait after Christmas, you could be my first welding project Very Happy (GF is getting me a HF welder as a Christmas gift)

Now that sounds like a plan! I have Blue Torch Fab lower control arm brackets. I am going to have to grind off the factory brackets and weld on the new ones on. Just need a welder, I'll bring the God hammer and pry bar to manipulate the control arms back in place.

Cool. Just remind me after Christmas. I do need to practice before we weld the mount to your TJ. On less you already have some welding hours, then you can do it. Last time I welded was back in college like 6 years ago and this was just a class I took one quarter, mostly Stick welding. The welding is flux-cored.

Last time I welded was in shop class in High School. I used a mig welder with argon, so I know a little BUT its been a couple of years (20 or so) since I have welded anything.
