| Can't go wrong with a 44. I know there are a ton of mods for the Dana 44 from lockers to diff covers to axles. | |

| How big (tires) are you planning to go? Whats wrong with your D35? have you looked at the CrMo axles for your D35?
From what I had read: A D35 is good with 33" tires, ok with 35" tires but that's the max. I really haven't paid attention to the limitations of the D44 or 8.8 since I don't have it and i don't plan on going bigger than 35" (currently on 33" going 35" in a far far very far future) but you can go big with it how big i don't know. I am sure someone here knows.

| The Ford 8.8 is really strong. Since it goes in trucks and mustangs a like, gear options are plenty and cheap. You could cross over to by a (mustang or F-150) gear set to see which is cheaper. How they work in a jeep for off road work... I'm a noob! lol | |

| Both are good axles. I don't think you can go wrong with either. they real difference is doing to be $$$$. you might be able to find a D44 cheaper. Then again $1650.00 parts (including locker) and labor isn't bad either, especially if that includes gears of your choice. Also, newer 8.8 out of explorers already have disc brakes.
I say you can't go wrong with either.

| My D35 is grinding, it has been for over a year. Sounds like I should go for the 8.8... | |

| just be sure to get a '96 or newer 8.8 from an Explorer. These axles have disc brakes and 31 spline shafts. A lot of older 8.8s and ones out of mustangs and rangers came with 28 spline shafts. No point in going with an 8.8 if you're not getting the stronger 31 spline shafts. | |

| True its your own pref. But do keep in mind the readiness of spares on the trails if you should ever need some wheeling with this group I think a 44 would be more common to find a trail spare than a 8.8 | |
