bots?

when you look on the home page to see who's online. what the hell are Bots? Google showed up on it... scratch

Internet bots, also known as web robots, WWW robots or simply bots, are software applications that run automated tasks over the Internet. Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone. The largest use of bots is in web spidering, in which an automated script fetches, analyses and files information from web servers at many times the speed of a human. Each server can have a file called robots.txt, containing rules for the spidering of that server that the bot is supposed to obey.

OK... I think this is what he's saying

Right now there is a bot listed online as "Google". Google has an automated program that comes on here and automatically records all the threads. Now notice if you do an advanced search, the button says "search google". So the forum's search engine is actually googles search engine. So if you search something (let's say "front bumper") the google search engine returns a few "paid ads" that match your search term, and then a list of all the myjeepforum threads that includes all those terms.

So the bot is just software that is recording our threads for future search purposes

If everyone does a search for "BOTS" every time they log on, they will spend all their time searching for each other and they won't have time to see what we are doing.
