PostSubject: flat tire   flat tire Icon_minitimeSun 24 May 2009, 4:22 pm

My TPMS alarm came on in the dash. I later noticed a pssst ever few seconds when backing up in my friend's driveway. I found a cut/crack in one of the knobs and it had a crack that went around onto the sidewall. It was only leaking when the tire was rotated with the crack on the ground.

I found out that my stock jack is now useless after the jeep is lifted. I tried using my friend's floor jack but even that wouldn't lift it high enough by itself. I had to get some 4" high patio bricks to make it work.

I guess its time to get a hi-lift jack. Never used one before. Not even sure where you put it to lift the jeep. I think there are different kinds. Any suggestions which I should get?

Discount Tire is closed Sunday so I will take the tire their tomorrow. I am guessing since the crack is on the sidewall that they can't patch it. I am really glad I got the warrenty on the tires.

You are right about the sidewall. They won't touch it. Never thought about the jack not working. How much lift do you have?

I have about a 5" net of lift ( 3" lift + 2" lift from tires).

I have the warrenty so I expect them to replace the tire since its partly on the sidewall. I don't know if it is a tire defect or I ran over something or someone sliced my tire. Discount Tire is closed today so I will find out tomorrow.

my 2 centabos (cents) first i got the 54 inch by smittybuilt around 40 bucks from 4 wheel parts
second use a ratchet strap close as possible to the tire run it around the frame and axle to keep it from flexing out on you while you try to lift it try not to wrap it around any lines as not to smash them
third depending on your set up find a secure spot to start jacking it(ha ha i said jacking it) front shackle or from a slider if you have either
and good luck watch out for your nads and and jaw some peeps call them widdowmakers because of their unsafe history

goodluck

i would invest in the AEV jack base so you can still use your stock jack or the trusty block of wood.

do NOT use a high lift for this purpose. A block of wood works fine, or the AEV base. But high lifts are just plain dangerous.

Or get a floor jack- you can't carry it with you so it does no good if you have a flat on the road. But at home it is great.

This happened at my friend's house. His floor jack (2.5 ton) was still too short to lift the jeep. His is very old so I don't know if my floor jack is any taller. If I had a flat at home that wouldn't be a problem I have my floor jack and plenty of bricks/wood here for any extra lift. I am just worried about something away from home. Do you guys all carry a block of wood or that AEV jack base with you everywhere you go?

Yeah, put the jack under the axle. Lifting from the frame would require a huge jack simply because as you lift the frame, the rear end is going to flex/droop. So it would require lifting very high.

I have never tried my scissor jack with my lift because I always use my floor jack with a 4x4 block on it.

you're supposed to lift from the axles. next to the control arms. the stock jack will still work. the wood is when the ground is uneven or if your in a hole and need an extra couple inches. a 4x4 about 8"-12" long works great. the AEV base fits in the storage compartment and still leaves room for other stuff too.
