So quick question for yall, I could use your thoughts
My buddys mother was driving his YJ in 4wd on the highway (she says 45-50mph). She noticed the 4wd light was on (ain't no telling how long she drove until then) and when she went to pull over the vehicle started loosing power and was smoking on the inside of the drivers tire and how the vehicle wont start. When you turn the key the motor doesn't crank, only the click of the selenoid (sp?) and the CEL comes on. The motor temp was normal when they stopped
They are having it towed by AAA to the stealership but I am interested as to what could be the culprit. In case I run across the problem again. Thanks
on edit: someone tried jump starting them and it still wouldn't work, and yes its a brand-spankin' new battery Maybe some random electrical issue?

Possible catastrophic alternator bearing failure?!? Low voltage does strange things with dash warning lights......smoke...Belt...No cranking...locked up alternator. I have seen an alternator lock up an engine. Just a guess.

Last weekend's episode of Xtreme 4x4 revealed what we all knew... .YJs were a bad era for Jeep.... the TJs made up for it. While it is at the dealership unload it and get a JK.....
Or just tow it to Geos and we can use it for the next car crush...

I would start with the basics first. Try removing the belts and check to see if alternator, power steering pump. etc. spin freely and none of them have locked up. If ok, see if you can manually turn the motor over by using a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft. If it turns over by hand, then you will need to check for fire to the plugs and / or see if its getting fuel. If the motor doesnt turn over by hand, remove the spark plugs and try turning over by hand again, looking for water/ coolant coming out. You cant compress water in the cylinder bore. This is just some starting points to look into. Hope this helps some....

What's the word on the YJ?
Until then, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
