Final lift question...i hope Empty
PostSubject: Final lift question...i hope   Final lift question...i hope Icon_minitimeTue 30 Mar 2010, 8:36 pm

Hi all,
my son has finally saved enough $$$ for a 2.5" lift. We are looking to get this one Rough Country

Here's my question: What is all the other stuff on the bottom of the page? (Steering stabilizers?, Track bar brackets?, Motor mount lift?, etc.) and do I need that stuff also?

Thanks, and prepare for an install party!

Michael

I would skip the transfer case spacers and save up for an SYE. The rest of the stuff wouldn't really be necessary on a JK, not sure about a TJ.

I didn't see a transfer case. What is that?

What is a SYE?

Read this: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/what-cv-shaft-why-do-i-want-one-854790

In fact, read this whole thing, too: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/tj-tech-boot-camp-must-read-new-tj-owners-forum-members-722109/

It's a lot, but it's worth it.

Honestly if I were you I would hold off. Rough Country lifts are like buying an acoustic guitar that comes in a box at Wal-Mart. They can get the job done, kind of, but it really depends on whether you want to make music or just have a guitar to sit in the corner of your dorm room to look cool.

There's a lot more that goes into a lift than I ever realized when I first got into it, and I've thrown a lot of money fixing stuff I skipped before. Do you know the difference between a heim joint and johnny joint or a clevite bushing? If you don't know what a transfer case is, then I wouldn't assume so. The point is you have a lot to learn. You could just take people's advice and be hit-and-miss or do the learning ahead of time so you know exactly what it is that you're getting.

I recommend you first figure out why you want a lift, what kind of wheeling you want to do, and then you can figure out where to go from there. If you don't know the answers to these questions, then really just be patient and wait until you can answer them honestly and accurately before you start spending money. Both my son and my wife have the 2.5 rough country lift with the transfer case drop down. Have not had any problems with it and have been on the trails. It is good for most wheeling, but if you want to do a little more hard core wheeling you may need to check into some bigger lifts. Both my sons and wifes Jeeps are daily drivers so we didnt want to go much higher. The bigger the lift, more cash involved.

Thanks all.

Toyz_2, do you think there is any way that my son and I can come out and look at your jeeps? We live close to schertz. This would give us some eyes-on what the 2.5 would look like on ours.

Deacon, thanks. I will read those articles today. This Jeep will be my sons when he turns 16. I don't want him going much higher than the 2.5 until he had much more experience and maturity to drive with it. We do light wheeling with the club, but for the most part it will be a daily driver.

It's not a question of lift height, and I'm not necessarily recommending for or against lift height. That's mostly why I suggested you make sure you can answer why you're looking to lift the Jeep, so you can have an idea of what's appropriate and what's easy.

For now my recommendation, honestly, is to look at just some spring spacers, what's called a budget boost, that nets you a couple of inches and gets you that slight lift look without replacing your suspension, and it's cheap without replacing your suspension with cheap components (Rough Country).

Then once you've had some more time to learn and wheel and think, you can figure out where you want to go from there.
