| Hey all, I don't post here much because I just haven't really had the opportunity to wheel with ya'll yet. I am going on a cross country tour with the wife and daughter and we will be going smack dab through Moab around the 13th to 14th of July. I am looking to find a good trail of novice to moderate skills in the area with an exact entrance and exit point that I can incorporate into my planned route. No major ledges, pucker factors or sure fire damage makers.....will have an additional 2000 miles to travel after this. Take into consideration I have done only minor wheeling out in Big Bend (Black Gap Pass and the Chihuahuan Desert afterwards). My Jeep IS A 2007 4 door Rubicon with NO aftermarket lift, no winch or aftermarket bumpers. Photos would be great if you have 'em post 'em!!!! Any help would be appreciated !!! | For additional information and possible suggestions from ya'll these are the major areas I will be going to/through; Roswell, NM, Petroglyph National Monument, NM, Meteor Crater in Winslow, AZ, Grand Canyon, AZ, Dinosaur Tracks in AZ, Valley of the Gods, UT, Natural Bridges National Monument, UT, Arches National Park, Moab, UT, short jaunt through Idaho, Grand Teton National Park, WY, Yellowstone National Park, WY, Glacier National Park, MT, Going to the Sun Road and Avalanche Lake in Glacier + Battlefield of Little Big Horn.
My official travel miles for my vacation will be 4389 miles without the short touristic jaunts. We have enough money for gas, food and the occasional hotel stay...the rest...don't know...don't care....we're just taking it day by day.

| Sounds like an awesome trip.
If you go a little farther west you could hit MOAB and the rubicon trail in one trip!

| The main one for variety of sites and not too difficult that we did by ourselves was "dome plateau" which i would recommend getting the book "guide to moab ut backroads and 4 wheel drive trails" by Charles A Wells. It has all the lat/long locations for when you come to a split in the trail which way to go. Its about a 5 hour trail with by passes for anything hard.
Also for just a neat "road" to drive on "Onion Creek" its basically a 10 mile road down a canyon, that looks like indiana jones....its an out and back, where dome goes in one place and comes out another.

LnuFnu I don't currently have GPS. I would prefer a trail that goes from point A to point B in such a way that it will connect from one part of a highway and coming out on the same or connecting highway. I may be picking up a GPS but money is a factor right now.

I saw 3 different Garmin models over at Costco running from $99 to $229. I have a Garmin 250. It is one of the basic ones but gets me where I want to go. I can program an address, coordinates or use the search feature to find gas stations, stores etc. Personally I wouldn't spend a lot of money as they all do the same thing. I don't like all the bells and whistles though. Just get me there. BTW, I downloaded a sexy female voice and it makes getting directions much more fun

| For a cross country trip a GPS sure is a handy thing to have... from where is the nearest gas station to food and you name it.
I would do some research on the net and look for features (topo would be a cool feature where you are going) that you believe you will use. Mine has saved me time and taken the PITA out of traveling. I use it all the time - I remember Geo calling LNU and getting a grid for Barnwell... sure made it nice after a long day.
I have a Garmin NUvi 500 in the Jeep, it does all the regular stuff plus has Topo and is waterproof which makes it perfect for the Jeep. T believe they d/c'ed that one though.

| I would say Hell's Revenge is THE can't miss trail. It is not too difficult if you bypass the optional obstacles. I have run it in a 4" lifted 1997 fullsize Tahoe on 35's, so I would think a JK could master it easily. I would not run it or most any of the trails alone. You could swing by Moab Offroad when you get there and see if they know of any groups that you could run with. Also City Market (the main grocery store) seems to be somewhat of a gatherinig point in the mornings for groups. | |

| I would agree Hell's revenge, is bad ass....and well worth a trip, it might be slightly intimidating to someone on there own, you wont really get lost as there are tire tracks the entire way, and there are by passes around all the hard stuff. I would say if you can team up with another jeep or two that have been there you would be better off...otherwise go with my first advise (dome plateau) if you have the time, lots of fun trail, arches, high cliff's, scenic beauty.... | |

| This month's (August) edition of JP magazine has an article about the 10 "best" trails at MOAB. It has lots of details w/GPS, vehicle requirements and damage probability. Might be worth grabbing a copy. http://www.jpmagazine.com/index.html | |
