| i shot some video at a concert and posted it on youtube. then i got an email from a company wanting to license the clip and offered me $200 to use it (if they use it). only thing is i need to fill out a w9. i am thinking i should go and get a tax id # rather than provide my social. i also countered with $200 for me to send it and another $200 if they use it. i did some research and video clips like this usually bring $200 - $1000, so i felt that was fair. i left it open for a counter-offer of my counter-offer. any warnings from anyone that has delt with things like this? - Quote :
- Dear Alfredo,
My associate, Peter King informed me of your interest in allowing us to license your video WHEELCHAIR MOSHING for our new clip show called SMASH CUTS - we are delighted!
This email serves as a follow up to your interest. I have attached a non-exclusive contract for your review and consideration with a license fee of $200 USD, along with a W-9 form. This means we will pay you $200 to broadcast your video on our television program. Please fax documents to (818) 480-3192 or scan back and email to my attention at your earliest convenience.
Please advise of your interest.
Best,
Chery

| I know nothing about this, it sounds reasonable. I think you are wise to protect your social, and if they want it bad enough they should be willing to pay for it. Take this for what for what its worth, R | |

| It sounds suspect to me but I am real wary of what looks like easy money. Do some research on the company and make sure that they exist. Let me talk to a fraud cop to see what he says. The Internet is full of wolves and the info that they are asking you to give them could put you in a bind if the wrong type of folks got it.
I may just be paranoid but something doesn't feel right about it. I hope it works out, just be smart about it.

| a simple google search reveals nothing of double time production or the contact listed................strange
the addy and phone # listed is the office of RENEGADE 83, a well known and respected reality show production company
it might be legit but i would call renegade directly and ask for the individual by name

it might be legit but i would call renegade directly and ask for the individual by name the initial contact was from renegade - the other people are thier licensing center. i will call renegade directly, as you suggested.

| Wow, I haven't heard CC in a long time =)
Did it cut off right before the line "sex with a severed head"? lol.
An EIN is pretty easy to get, so just use that. Note, it may take up to two weeks to get one.
A word of caution: if the production company is in any way connected with the record label, denying them the use of the video for their fee may result in a DMCA take-down request, and an assertion of ownership on their part. No guarantees on that one, but it's something to keep in mind.

| Yes, I too would contact someone and get a little more info on it. I don't know much about selling video's but if it's anything like selling stock photos, I would take caution. I have sold a stock photo or two and never did I need to fill out a W9. From what I understand you only have to fill out one of those if you were hired to take that shot. Not if they are buying it from you after the fact. If they are buying personal property a W9 is not required. That's how I understand it anyhow, and that's how it is with my stock photography. But like I said I really don't know much about it just what I have delt with in the past with my photos. | |

| dont get N2 started about "interesting offers"....
I once got a call from N2 and I wont type out all the details but lets just say it involved 15 colombian midget amputees, 1 man with no teeth who can only play the banjo and the jungle-gym at the city park would have never been the same....

| JK - a couple of suggestions. First confirm that the numbers in the email actually go to the individual. Ask for a physical address and use google earth to find the place - from there you can check the area code on the phone as well as contact the local BBB to see if any complaints have been filed and if the business exists. Another thing - you are not required to turn in a W9 on anything less than $600 so there is no reason for them to ask for that, I would state that fact and say that if they decide to do more business with you in the future and the amount (annually) ends up over $600 then you would consider the W9.... it even states that there is an exemption on the W9 Form. I used to work a crapload of cash jobs and to avoid the 10-99s and W9s I would usually stop working that particular (security) job when the pay got over $500, we would rotate the jobs.... | |
