You don't want to do that. That means custom axle shafts and a lot more skill building axles than any of us have. I though he was going to leave them full width? There is no benefit to narrowing the axles except for narrowing the the axles I think you meant it's important when he welds the new tabs and brackets on the axles Its the end of the month and I wont know how much work i'll have until Friday about noon.

| From what I understand is that Stick welding will give you the strongest welds, with the deepest pentration, if you do it right. If I were to compare MIG to Stick welding, Mig would be like Arab with a little pencil dick trying to penetrate one of his 50 virgins, and Stick would be like a good old fashioned Pornstar that get's the job done well!!! Now quote that you Fawkers!!! | |

I guess the real important part is when we cut the axles to shorten them then weld them back together. YOUR DOING WHAT????????? YA'LL REALLY NEED TO CALL ME - potlickinpirate wrote:
- In my opinion.... with stick welding I have better control of penetration along with selection of tensile strength of the filler metal. An experienced person with the right mig welder can make comparable welds also. My experience is mostly in the field where being outdoors makes mig welding not an option (due to wind blowing away shielding gasses). Tig welding is another indoor option, which I really enjoy, but it is slow. I love to fabricate / weld, but have never been a full time welder. With my history / experience I am more than a "hobby welder". Looking at the fab. skills of some of these folks, they are very talented. I know quite a little, by no means do I know it all. R.
Talk to Dern, most machinists know what the hell they are doing when it comes to welding.
That redneck fella, east of here, has got his game together (even though he is prolly gonna flame me). I loves me some stick welder, and love to run 7018dc rod, but i hate the slag and clean up, if i need something burnt in real deep or just cant clean it well some 6018 will do the trick. but for most fab work the mig produces better looking weld that are easy to clean, in less time, and my rod is on a 10 pound spool. different jobs , different welders............... and thanks for the complement randy

| Depending on what kind of welders you have it's possible that your stick welder may burn in deeper, I guess. Someone who knows welding would have to clarify. | |

Sorry Adam, I forgot to answer your question, I was told stick welding was better than mig,( ) I know we have to weld brackets on the axle to the lift, not sure what all else needs welding. I guess the real important part is when we cut the axles to shorten them then weld them back together.

| Marshall is getting the RockKrawler 5.5 long arm stretch kit. We have to move the rear axle back, remove the gas tank, cut the fenders, weld the long arms on. He also has a Dana 60 & 44 sitting in the back yard after we get the lift on that will be next. This is a custom job (that's why we need lots of help). Let me know if any of you guys can come so I know how much meat and beer to buy...I did forget its Easter weekend so not sure how many can come. Brian, sorry to hear about the jeep trouble, what happened to Brandy's jeep? | |
