Anyone in Corpus feels like helping me replace my 98 Wrangler clutch? I have never done it but it doesn’t really look that hard just time consuming. I will have pizza and beer for whoever wants to help me Corpus area - help/show me to replace the clutch Icon_biggrin

Clutch is not bad yet but sometimes I am having a hard time to get it in 1st gear and/or I get a bad vibration when taking off in 1st.

Thanks!

Raul

The Haynes/Chilton manual is your friend, Luke...use the force...

A decent transmission jack would be a plus also. The new clutch should come with an allignment tool. This question needs to be asked before you buy. Replace the pilot bushing/bearing (probably causing difficulty going into 1rst.) and the throw out bearing also.

If the flywheel shows signs of extreme heat (strange purple colors) take it off and have it resurfaced. Make some phone calls ahead of time, so you don't have to hunt the day of. Some flywheel bolts are 1 time use. They are lots cheaper than buying a crankshaft when the flywheel comes loose after you are done. Get the bolts from chrysler they are special. If you don't need to use them they will take em' back.

This would be a good time to change the oil in the tranny/transfer case also. If you drain them first they will be that much lighter.

I have not done a clutch in a TJ, but I have done many from Cranes, Heavy trucks, all the way down to a subaru. I hope this helps with out preachin', good luck, take your time, keep track of all of the bolts, and let me know if you get bound up. Randy

Oh yeah, There is a great parts house in Ingleside...smart guys, lots of help. They would probably be able to handle that flywheel...or know where to go, fyi.

I can't remember the name, they are on the road to the Naval base, and Gulf Marine if that helps. The Gulf Coast Pirate should know...he works pretty close to it.

Well I am not in a hurry since it’s not my daily driver and it’s still working. I will be busy the weekends of April 9th and 16th so I was thinking sometime by the end of April.

I think I have most of the necessary tools (not air tools). The only things I need are a bigger floor jack (probably need a couple of them), the jack transmission adapter, and a few jack stands (I already have two, probably need 4 total).

I have the Haynes manual and also printed out this instructions today http://www.4x4xplor.com/clutch.html

I replace the fluids about 4,000 miles ago (~ 10 months ago when I bought it) but if draining it will make it easier and safer then I will drain it.

Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate it!

Hey Raul, I would be glad to help when you're ready. I've done a few clutches on 4WD vehicles so I know it is a lot easier with at least 2 people. Just let me know at least a week ahead of time so I can make plans.

You must be thinking about Bills Auto Supply...they are great guys, I have done quite a bit of business with them, as a matter of fact I used to live right next door to it!!

Cool. I will let you know when we will meet. I am aiming for the last weekend of April. I still need to buy the clutch. I am leaning towards a LUK.

I am also planning on replacing the timing chain, lifters and camshaft to the Wrangler in the following months so I am sure there will be opportunities to meet! (if people want to help me replace them)

If I get the heep up and running by the end of April I will be glad to and give you a hand, I've never changed a clutch either, but I'm sure we can figure it out.

I mean how hard can it be?
