the shelters have ropes going down to stakes. So instead of tying to stakes, tie to the grocery bag of sand. Would require a whole lot of wind to lift a couple bags full of sand.

| Ron Gilbert dropped his shelter off we me today. So that's another one to use... I personally like the grocery bags full of sand idea. | |

dig a hole...thats what I've always done We are talking about having a fire, Joe, not taking a dump LOL...dig the hole and then place a screen over it...make it as big or small as ya want...even cook from it...no differnt than having a BBQ pit or something out there with the lid left open... ...but back to my corner now I go

Suggest that you bring something to keep the tents tied down - either longer tent stakes, one gallon buckets that you can put sand in or weights of some sort... I remember that being a PITA every time I go to the beach. Plastic grocery bags filled w/ sand work wonders =) Of course, those wide plastic stakes made for sand work great, too. Regarding sun shelters - you can also make a fairly inexpensive one using a plastic tarp and four extending tarp poles (total price usually < $20) -- just don't do it w/ a canvas tarp, the weight and force are too much for the poles. I usually bring a tarp, because if nothing else, it can be attached to the vehicle and weighted to ground, or strung up between two vehicles. !c

| I got another sun shelter screen that looks the same as the one in RG's picture. I considered the more expensive metal accordion type but I had one bend from high winds before and didn't want to try again. It was a cheapo accordion but I figured I would try this tent pole type this time. I still need to get some bigger stakes for the sand. | |

| Thanks RG, I will try wally world. The inside of an old washing mashine makes a great pit too. It has that cylinder thing in the middle but the outside is already vented. | |

Permit for what? To drive on the beach? To fish from the beach?
the permit is to drive on the beach. So everyone make note- you MUST buy a permit at any store in town in order to drive on the beach. It is a bit of a stretch between town and the beach, so you really don't want to have to turn around to go back to buy a permit

Permit for what? To drive on the beach? To fish from the beach? Speaking of which, I need to remember to pick up a fishing license. Actually, I assume they can be had down there. I'm not much of a fisherman, but hey.

This is actually a very good question. Does anyone know the answer or otherwise know how to find out? I'm searching online for an answer, haven't found one yet. But I found these Once you access the beach and turn north, you have 21 miles of beach. 4WD is required most of the time once you pass 3 Mile Cut (actually about 1.5 miles north of the beach access road and usually a good spot to castnet bait). Once you pass 3 mile cut the crowds thin out and it's not hard to find seclusion. Stop at one of the stores in town and buy a beach permit for $6.00. They're good from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.

That shelter was cheap... like $35 at wallyworld... there are plenty better ones out there but that one was great for the price.
And those northern tool stakes that Dude posted are perfect. We should invite robar...the size of his ego/head could shelter all of us from the sun
