Went out there solo as I had to delay my vacation by a week due to Ike. My friends went the week before me (original plan).
I wrote up a blog post about it w/ pics and such here:

RGV is still closed (has been for months aparantly) - they claim they're going to try and open up the showers again by December. Most Southern roads were closed due to recent flooding. Could not access the river road at all, except for a short section east of Black Gap Pass junction - just enough to get to Fresno/Mariscal mine.
If you're going to camp out in the back country, you _really_ have to stay at Twisted Shoe at least one night - not only is real close to the beautiful Juniper Canyon for hiking, it also has an impressive view of the lowland desert from Chilocotal to Elephant Tusk and beyond.
Four-wheeling is tame, real tame. You can do every road in 2wd without an issue. Generally to ignore the rangers when they talk about "oh man, that road's 4x4 only!" - these are more like fire roads, really, really rough fire roads. Gotta go slow is about it.
Oh yes, and I've now officially completed every back road in big bend - only took three years =)
