I have to admit Mav, I am not as fluent at the true power ballads as you are. I know lots of 80's stuff, but never hear the power balads besides the popular ones. I do enjoy a good hair balad before hair was synonomous with bad musician. Also, N2, WTF?!? How do you not like the 80's?

Hell yeah Journey! And that new philipino guy is crazy good, in fact, I think he prolly has a stronger voice than Steve Perry, but Steve Perry is still the man! I liked it when they had Steve Perry, Neil Shawn, and Steve smith, those guys rocked! Also, did ya'll know Randy Jackson was the bass player with Journey for a few years?

ya gotta remember- I was in audio engineering school during most of this music. And those of us in audio engineering were laughing at these bands and their crappy tunes.

We were listening to ELP, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc...

N2, you may not know but Maverick and I both were music majors I play in several professional jazz groups and believe that I know the mathematical intricacies of music as good as anyone, (almost,) and I love this music! It is just a personal taste thing but after your sound engineer comment I had to throw some professional weight on the other side. PS, I am not a fan of Pink Floyd. I respect it, but don't listen to it. Give me some slash and axle rose! But would ya'll agree that after appetite for destruction it was never quite the same? That album was HUGE. Welcome to the jungle? Paradise City? Sweet Child o Mine? You're fucking Crazy? Rocket Queen? My Michelle? Mr. Brownstone? All of these songs and more are on that album!

I think the difference here is- you weren't listening to this music in the 80's. So when you got to the age of listening to music, you look back to the 80's to see what had been done... Just like I was born in the 60's, so I didn't listen to music until the 70's. And then I looked back at the 60's and thought that stuff was way cool- Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, etc...

Look at what I grew up listening to in the 70's: Eagles, Aerosmith, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Dire Straits, and on & on... And then you try to compare that music to the music that came out in the 80's. The 80's music did zero for me. It was all so plastic, poppy and generic.

The 70's (aside from disco) saw a rise of acts that had huge musical talent... Then in the 80's the record labels started signing every band that could write a single catchy song. The labels weren't signing bands for the long haul- they were signing bands that could ma a quick buck. And if you look back- only a handful of those bands are still around and making music.

I'll give you GnR though. They had talent... Ego killed them.

ya axle rose went crazy. Also I have to admit that the reason I like some of this music is that it is so incredibly bad or cheesy. For example, One Night in Bangkok? Rick Astley? Buggles? Depeche Mode? This stuff is horrible but can't help liking it. Actually Rick Astley has a good voice but how can you take his music seriously? I was born in the 70's and grew up listening to music in the 80s. Some of these bands are great, some are not. But I would choose this music over anything from the 70s. That music just sux.
