Not if you go I-10 to Grand Parkway to 90 to Hwy 6. You hit more lights, but you avoid that 1-45 mess

If you try to find a place to stay in Galveston, most of them are still full of evacuees. The Ferry ride is nice, but you never know if you have to sit in line for 30 minutes or 4 hours, or more.
Not to put a damper on anything, just giving the facts. Who knows, it might improve a little bit between now and trip time.
Damper? What you just described is exactly like PINS LOL

| Another note is that this has mostly been just a day trip for me. Get up early, head there, and get home that night. Some of you seem to want to make it a weekend trip. That's a little different. I can understand the folks coming from farther away wanting to stay or camp. I'll go with whatever. Maybe we should just call it our annual BEACH trip now that we have chapters. That way we can just change it around each year to accomodate everyone. I'm still gonna do my PiNS run dammit if I have to go alone. | |

| I don't mind going to Crystal myself. My point is that when we originally went to PINS, we said "lets make this a yearly thing". So I think we should keep up with that. This was metioned before we had a H-town or even Waco chapter. I actually make a yearly or bi-annual run myself, and invite anyone that wants to attend. I'm not trying to be difficult, it just seems like the PINS trip idea is already starting to get compromised. We go to PINS for a reason - crowd free & miles of beach. But Crystal works too. | |

| i'm game for crystal beach.... but if what todd said is true, there isn't much to go to. I'd like to hear his report when he gets back. also, things may get better before the trip, but how much better? 1 store, 1 gas station, no hotels.... it's not about the drive. i might not be able to make it to the beach run this year at all depending on budget (diapers, formula, and clothes are damn expensive for a fast growing, hungry, rug rat). I'm crossing my fingers for k-rocks even though i shouldn't really go for budget reasons. but i figure, this is the very LAST chance to see it. | |

Anyone seeing a pattern here?
Houston to Shiloh = 3 hours SA to Shiloh = 5 hours (no one went- except Cody who is an honorary H-Town member since he comes here frequently)
Houston to Crystal Beach = 1.5 hours SA to Crystal Beach = 5 hours (none want to go)
There I said it.
And on another note.... How can the Pins trip be considered "a yearly thing" when it has only happened once before? There's no "tradition" created by a single event...Well, OK there were 2 runs to pins, but they were in the same year- one in Feb, and one in the summer. And a handful of H-town made it both times. And one of those Pins runs occurred when gas was hitting around $4/gallon!
Sorry... Count me out this time. Let it all out N2. Maybe you have a point there. Not that I have been on any of those trips. I am OK with Crystal Beach.

It's been a great while since I've been to the Galveston / Crystal Beach area, way before Ike. Has any been there lately? Is it fixed up? Are the beaches OK? I would like to go again if its at least semi fixed up.
Here's a good video I found when I Googled "Crystal Beach".

I think it we will have a good time. :grouphug3: I only watched about 45 seconds of the video. Its an old video. It looks nothing, nothing like that now. Here is a better video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwjyR8U_3So&feature=relatedCrystal Beach & Bolivar were almost completely wiped off of the map. There is only one grocery store, and its not fully open yet. The closest real store is over 30 miles away. There are only 3 or 4 places to eat. Maybe try and catch a fish or two or three if all my secret spots haven't been washed away. I'll post up a report w/pics when I get back.

I am down for whatever but our beaches sucked before Ike rolled around.... I guess because it is in my back yard I don't appreciate it enough. I am just gonna drink beer and cook anyway so just say where and I will try and make it happen.
